“Ivy” is a recent addition to Zoe Nathan’s harlequin painting series, and showcases the lovely landscapes and vineyards of Santa Barbara County, in addition to celebrating its equestrian culture. It is part of a smaller sub-series of works with the same model that allude to the Buddhist allegory of “Taming the Ox,” where in this case a novice rider learns to overcome her fears and the challenges involved in learning to ride a spirited horse, named Ivy, and is seen in a heroic light, in harmony with the lovely mountainous terrain at dusk.
Zoë Nathan is a multimedia artist, whose oil paintings and bronze sculptures delve into the realm of romantic realism, which she also explores in film, photography, and opera. Zoë received her Bachelor of Arts Degree at Sarah Lawrence College, and currently divides her time between the Santa Ynez Valley and Europe.
