Statement
“Ivy” is a recent addition to Zoe Nathan’s harlequin painting series, and showcases the lovely landscapes and vineyards of Santa Barbara County, in addition to celebrating its equestrian culture. It is part of a smaller sub-series of works with the same model that allude to the Buddhist allegory of “Taming the Ox,” where in this case a novice rider learns to overcome her fears and the challenges involved in learning to ride a spirited horse, named Ivy, and is seen in a heroic light, in harmony with the lovely mountainous terrain at dusk.
